Return to Normandy: 6 Juin 1944 : “There are moments in everyone’s life in which I believe an experience becomes indelibly etched into one’s consciousness, creating a filter through which the world will forever be viewed and personal values forged. For me, standing on the sands of Omaha Beach at Normandy’s northern coast, looking across the English Channel at sunrise on the 57th anniversary of D-Day, was such a moment.

Several years ago, while watching archival battle footage during commemorations for the 50th anniversary of D-Day, I was drawn into the drama of the Allied invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944 marking the beginning of the end of the war in Europe. It was, however, after reading WWII scholar Stephen Ambrose’s best selling documentary of the events, that I knew I needed to witness Normandy myself to get a better grasp of the immense struggle that took place there. As a photographer, my mission was in part to visually record what I saw. The ‘after-images’ I was to create could perhaps help tell the story and inspire others to appreciate the scope of dedication and sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation enabling us to lead the lives we do in freedom today.

My wife was my travel companion. We started our journey in Giverny, home to Claude Monet’s resplendent gardens, and the source of many of his impressionist paintings. From there we moved directly to a host of D-Day venues in Caen, Bénouville, Bayeux, Colleville s/Mer, Arromanches, and Avranche. This photo-essay is the product of my efforts to visualize, learn, record and teach.”
